Paris Olympics: The New Test for NBC’s Peacock in Attracting and Retaining Subscribers

As the Paris Olympics approach, Comcast sees a pivotal opportunity to enhance its streaming platform, Peacock, aiming to boost both subscriber acquisition and retention. This marks Peacock’s first major Olympics since its launch in 2020, offering Comcast’s NBCUniversal a significant chance to leverage its extensive U.S. media rights.

Analyst Craig Moffett of MoffettNathanson notes that while this will be Peacock’s first Olympics unencumbered by pandemic-related disruptions, the platform has gained valuable experience to better capitalize on the Games. The favorable time zone in Paris—six hours ahead of the U.S. East Coast, compared to Tokyo’s 13-hour difference in 2021—and the allure of Paris itself are expected to enhance viewership.

For the first time, Peacock will broadcast the entire Summer Olympics. NBC’s executive producer Molly Solomon highlighted that unlike in 2021, when Peacock had limited rights, the platform will now offer unrestricted access to all events. This change is anticipated to eliminate past confusion and make Peacock the comprehensive Olympic destination in the U.S.

The Olympics represent a crucial moment for Peacock amid a challenging media landscape. Live sports are a key draw for both traditional TV and streaming services, and Peacock’s coverage aims to attract significant viewership. NBCUniversal, which has a long history with the Olympics dating back to 1936, has invested $7.65 billion to renew its media rights through 2032.

With the 2020 Tokyo and 2022 Beijing Games seeing record-low viewership, the Paris Olympics, featuring iconic venues and events, are expected to draw a larger audience. Early indications show strong interest, with 60% of U.S. consumers planning to stream the Games and 47% intending to watch on traditional TV. NBCUniversal has already secured over $1.2 billion in advertising for the event.

Peacock, priced at $7.99 with ads or $13.99 without, continues to benefit from its parent company’s sports portfolio. Recent exclusive events, such as the NFL Wild Card game, have successfully driven new subscriptions. Despite recent fluctuations in subscriber numbers, Peacock remains focused on leveraging sports to attract and retain viewers.

In addition to extensive live coverage, Peacock will offer replays and original content, including new shows and AI-driven features like daily recaps narrated by Al Michaels. NBCUniversal’s ongoing commitment to sports underscores its strategy to solidify Peacock’s position in the competitive streaming market.
